Gavin Winstanley

Ochiltree Community Hub

Chairman

I have been married to Carol for 19 years and have a daughter named Tilly. We have lived in Ochiltree for the past 14 years, moving here in 2011 from Ayr.  I have worked in Construction for the last 28 years and I am currently a Customer Relations Manager for a major UK housebuilder.

For the past seven years, I have served as a Trustee for the Community Hub for seven years, with the last three years being as the Chairperson.  Always quick to help out and support various events within the village, even doubling up as a bingo caller at the monthly bingo session at then Hub

I am an enthusiastic runner (albeit slowish but still a runner) and a member of Team Cumnock running group. I actively support the Couch to 5k program which takes place every year, helping new runners achieve their goals.  I also enjoy going to the gym with my family after work.

Ochiltree has played a large part in my life.  I was brought up on a farm in Ochiltree parish and have lived in the area for most of my 63 years attending Ochiltree Primary, 21st in the old community centre and married in Ochiltree Church.  I am married with 3 adult children, 2 grandchildren and another on the way.   My work history varied from a secretary at the Scottish and Oceanic Area Control Centre  for 20 years,   then owning my own business as Sub-postmaster and  a Flower and Gift Shop for the last 20 years before I retired.

In 2023 we moved into Ochiltree and I started as a volunteer at the Hub and subsequently joined the board of Trustees.   My main aim was to set up a small Gift Shop incorporating local Ayrshire crafters and hopefully expand the shop over the years.   I help regularly in the Hub and love meeting many old acquaintances and school friends of years gone by. The Hub is a fantastic facility to have in our village

Having been born and brought up in Leith and Edinburgh, I spent most of my working life in Ayrshire at the Scottish Agricultural College at Auchincruive and have lived in Ochiltree for well over 40 years. I am married with three adult children who were brought up in Ochiltree.

I was a founder member and a Chairperson of the Friends of Ochiltree Primary School in the 1980s & 90s and since retirement have been involved with the Ochiltree Hub Project both as a volunteer and a Trustee over 10 years. I am particularly interested in the way the Hub can enhance the enjoyment of life and reduce social isolation for the people of Ochiltree and the surrounding area by facilitating more in the way of crafts, art, games, music, theatre, fun and exercise and other social recreation.

I have lived just on the outskirts of Ochiltree for almost 40 years since marrying a local lad.

My husband attended Ochiltree Primary School as did his father before him, our 2 sons attended the Primary School and Auchinleck Academy. When they attended the primary I was a regular parent volunteer within the school.

I recently retired and worked for 40 years with the NHS as a Speech and Language Therapist, during that time I worked within the community and Primary Schools across the Cumnock and Doon Valley Area

I started  as a volunteer in the Hub  in 2022 and then joined the board of Trustees. I feel it is important to give back to the community that has supported our family for generations. I am mainly responsible for sourcing funds and applying for financial support to enable the Hub deliver a range of opportunities and help out wherever I can.

I am married to Leslie and have lived on a farm on the outskirts of Ochiltree for 49 years. We raised our 3 children, Ian Alastair and Jane who all attended Ochiltree Primary School. Alongside being a busy farmers wife and mother I was a freelance farm Secretary, worked for a chartered surveyor’s company and latterly a purchase ledger controller for a dairy engineering company for 15 years. I have been an elder in Ochiltree Parish Church for over 30 years, organising many of the fund-raising events for church funds. I have also been involved with Ochiltree SWI being President, Secretary and committee member for over 40 years.  This year I retired as Treasurer of Ayrshire Federation SWI, a post I held for 7 years.  I have been a trustee of Ochiltree Community Hub for 18 months and am willing to help out with whatever needs to be done.
